Raising Kids Who Read

May 18, 2015

Daniel Willingham has published a new book on the topic of reading. In his past writing and short videos, he presents educators and the public clear, concise, and research based answers to many of the critical questions faced by educators. He broadens his audience with this book to include parents as well as teachers. Willingham makes the case for reading as the central skill for success in school. He offers research based and practical tips in an easy to follow style that will appeal to both the professional educator as well as non-professionals. He outlines the essential components for teaching reading: phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Willingham also highlights motivation and its essential role in teaching reading. He emphasizes the need for children to access the natural reinforcers and consequences essential for children becoming life long readers.
