Evaluating Principal Performance

July 27, 2011

The importance of teachers in promoting student achievement has been the topic of discussion in education circles for the past decade. During this period the role the principal plays in the building effective schools has received much less attention. The July 2011 release by Integrated Leadership Development Initiative and WestEd changes this by focusing on the principal with the publishing of paper on the available research for evaluating principal’s performance.

This paper provides a comprehensive literature review with insights into what we know about principal evaluation as derived from a set of primary and secondary sources. Researchers analyzed 68 documents, published from 1980 through 2010, to identify themes and perspectives from the literature that might be useful to practitioners and policymakers working to improve district principal evaluation systems.
