Classroom Observation Research For Use In Teaching Mathematics

April 2, 2015

WestEd published a research synthesis titled Math in Common: Classroom Observations Documenting Shifts in Instruction for District-wide Improvement. The report was created for “Math in Common” a five-year initiative of 10 California school districts as they implement the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSS-M) across grades K–8.

The synthesis is designed to answer the question, “What does the recent literature say about selecting or developing and using classroom observation systems in general and more specifically in mathematics for the purpose of documenting instructional shifts?” This brief provides educators with information for selecting, developing and using classroom observation systems to inform school principals and districts of the impact of teachers’ instructional practices and to evaluate the effect of reform efforts. The report goes on to highlight critical features of classroom observation systems and how to implement observation tools.
