{"id":906,"date":"2018-05-01T11:28:20","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T18:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winginstitute.org\/news\/?p=906"},"modified":"2018-05-01T11:32:37","modified_gmt":"2018-05-01T18:32:37","slug":"naep-nations-report-card-2017-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winginstitute.org\/news\/naep-nations-report-card-2017-released\/","title":{"rendered":"NAEP Nation\u2019s Report Card for 2017 Released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has been assessing what American students know and can do in various subject areas since 1969.\u00a0 Subjects include: mathematics, reading, science, writing, the arts, civics, economics, geography, U.S. history, and in Technology and Engineering Literacy (TEL). NAEP generates the Nation\u2019s Report Card every two years summarizing test scores by subject area, grade levels (4<sup>th<\/sup>, 8<sup>th<\/sup>, and 12<sup>th<\/sup>), student demographics, school characteristics, etc.\u00a0 With very few exceptions, the 2017 national results did not show any gains in test scores from previous years.\u00a0 One of the more critical metrics is the percentage of students who score at or above proficiency.\u00a0Proficiency is the target academic performance benchmark for students.\u00a0 The 2017 results show that few students are at or above proficiency in all subjects.\u00a0 In reading, only 37% of fourth graders, 36% of eighth graders, and 357% of twelfth grader were at or above proficiency.\u00a0 In math, each subsequent assessed grade showed lower percentages of students at or above proficiency (4<sup>th<\/sup>grade at 40%, 8<sup>th<\/sup>grade at 34%, 12<sup>th<\/sup>grade at 25%).\u00a0 Such scores are disappointing given the efforts made towards school improvement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Citation:\u00a0 <\/strong>Institute of Education Sciences.
