{"id":1426,"date":"2020-02-25T11:11:57","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T19:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winginstitute.org\/news\/?p=1426"},"modified":"2020-02-25T11:18:19","modified_gmt":"2020-02-25T19:18:19","slug":"new-initiative-reviews-reading-programs-against-the-relevant-research-base","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winginstitute.org\/news\/new-initiative-reviews-reading-programs-against-the-relevant-research-base\/","title":{"rendered":"How effective are reading instruction programs?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Comparing Reading Research to Program Design: An Examination of Teachers College Units of Study.<\/strong>\u00a0This report is the first of a new initiative by Student Achievement Partners to review different reading instructional programs that have been adopted and are widely used in schools.\u00a0\u00a0The goal is to examine the programs in the context of best available research evidence regarding the critical components of teaching reading.\u00a0Specifically, the components identified include:\u00a0\u00a0phonics and fluency, text complexity, building knowledge and vocabulary, and English learner supports.\u00a0\u00a0The first program reviewed was Units of Study from the Teachers College Reading &amp; Writing Project.\u00a0\u00a0The findings were detailed, but the overall conclusion was that, despite the curriculum\u2019s many qualities, it would \u201cbe unlikely to lead to literacy success for all of the American public schoolchildren, given the research.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The curriculum would support children who show up at school already reading or primed to read.\u00a0\u00a0It would not meet the needs of children who need practice opportunities in a specific area of reading or language development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Citation:&nbsp;<\/strong>Adams, M.J., Fillmore, L.W., Goldenberg, C., Oakhill, J., Paige, D.D., Rasinski, T., &amp; Shanahan, T.
